Daly City is the largest city in San Mateo County, part of the San Francisco Bay area. Today more than 101,000 residents take advantage of its central location and diverse economy centered around retail, healthcare and small business.
Native Americans lived in the area that would become Daly City from at least the sixth century. Spain claimed the area in the early 16th century, but the native tribes didn't encounter Europeans until Juan Bautista de Anza explored the region in 1776. The Spanish set up religious missions and used the land for raising crops and grazing cattle. However, Daly City wasn't inhabited until wealthy Mexicans established ranches there after California gained independence. After the US government declared more land was available to private citizens, Irish immigrants established their own farms where Westlake, Serramonte, Colma, and Pacifica stand now.
Daly City experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century, in line with the expansion of San Francisco. More residents arrived in 1906, after their San Francisco homes were destroyed in an earthquake. However, it still remained relatively small until developer Henry Doelger built the community of Westlake, a major residential, business, and retail district. This historic neighborhood is one of America's earliest examples of a large-tract suburb.
From humble beginnings, Daly City has become one of California's key locales. Whether you're a buyer looking for bullion or a collector looking for rare coins, here is a guide to this city's local coin shops.
