Nestled in Northeastern Georgia, this area is a consolidated city-county. Athens-Clarke County performs all the municipal duties of an incorporated region while also possessing the administrative powers of a county. At its heart, Athens is a college town, home to the University of Georgia.
As of the 2010 census, the consolidated city-county claims a population of 115,452, plus another 1,250 people in the surrounding area. Nicknamed "The Classic City" due to its historical name, Athens, the city also sustains the theme via neo-classical Greek architecture.
In 1785, a charter measure was passed that authorized the founding of the first state-supported university in the United States, the University of Georgia. Sixteen years later, the first classes were held, making the school one of the few in the country to exist for more than two centuries.
With a modest population, this area has a respectable but not overwhelming amount of commercial coin dealers.
