New Orleans Mint
The New Orleans Mint, a branch of the U.S. Mint, operated from 1838 to 1861 and from 1879 to 1909. During these years, it produced more than 427 million gold and silver coins carrying a total face value of more than $307 million. Coins produced here include a wide range of denominations; each is identified by an 'O' mint mark on the reverse. The New Orleans Mint building is now considered to be a National Historic Landmark, and houses the Louisiana State Museum.
