Tacoma, Washington lies 30 miles southwest of Seattle. This port city is named after nearby Mount Rainier, which was originally known as Mount Tahoma. It is nicknamed the "City of Destiny," because early in its history, Tacoma was chosen as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city is also famous for the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
